When Buddy (Eric Lloyd, The Santa Clause 3) is abandoned by his parents at the age of seven, he is dumped in the south at the small-town home of some older unmarried cousins.

The Christmas Shoes bounces between two families--the Layton household, where father Robert (Rob Lowe, The West Wing) is so consumed with his work that he misses his daughter's recital; and the Andrews home, where mother Maggie (Kimberly Williams, According to Jim) has been diagnosed with a fatal heart ailment. Desperate to make his mother's last moments happy, Maggie's son Nathan struggles to buy a pair of red dancing shoes that seem like a pair Maggie remembers from her childhood.

Nathan Andrews has grown up and is now a medical resident. When the young doctor loses a patient, he begins to rethink his career and moves back home with his father. Just as Nathan is settling in his world begins to crumble when the lives of the woman he loves and an innocent young boy are in crisis. Nathan finds himself questioning God, fate and the fragility of life, all the while hoping for a Christmas Miracle.

I thought long and hard about taking the time to review this album, since a "surfer" can already tell by the "average customer rating" that this is a much-beloved album, a real five-star classic. But here is a time when a vote really counts, and I want to be on the list of those who recognize a great album when they hear it.

My wife and I still have our original LP. Sometimes it's fun to listen to it, with the slight "pops and crackles" sounding like a fireplace. But, oh my! It's on CD!! And this album sounds glorious.

These are the only carols created in modern times that have obtained international acceptance, from local choirs to stars like Andy Williams, Peggy Lee, Nat 'King' Cole and Frank Sinatra have recorded Burt carols. So listen to these 'mini-masterpieces,' beautifully performed by the Columbia Choir with occasional light accompaniment by the Ralph Carmichael Brass Ensemble and organ.
